Dear beautiful you,
For the last 4.5 billion years, I have been here, watching over you. Every night my friends and I show you the way and keep you company. We GLOW for you. We give you glimpses of the brightest of bright lights that will greet you in the morning to announce the day.
You can call me Valores. I am the moon and my friends are the stars.
So lovely to finally speak to you one-on-one! This love-letter from me to you is to tell you to straight-away, right this minute, without delay give yourself permission to HOPE. I know that you are worried that nothing can be done for the earth and I am here to tell you that being worried is not necessarily a bad thing. It means that you are lucky enough to have figured out already that there is trouble. Now you can guide those around you. Change doesn’t happen overnight, but once we figure out how to go about something, the rate of learning applies.
What concerns me though, even more than our green problem, is when the people needed as change-makers, people like you, lose hope. Where there is no hope, change cannot be inspired. Without change, we cannot save the planet. I don’t mean HOPE in the sense of let’s carry on as we are and hope for the best – I mean ACTIVE HOPE.
An example of active hope:
Strolling along the edge of the sea, a man catches sight of a young woman who appears to be engaged in a ritual dance. She stoops down, then straightens to her full height, casting her arm out in an arc. Drawing closer, he sees that the beach around her is littered with starfish, and she is throwing them one by one into the sea. He lightly mocks her: “There are stranded starfish as far as the eye can see, for miles up the beach. What difference can saving a few of them possibly make?” Smiling, she bends down and once more tosses a starfish out over the water, saying serenely, “It certainly makes a difference to this one.” – from The Art of Possibility by Rosamund and Benjamin Zander (originally: Loren Eiseley)
Active hope is to keep doing your bit and to inspire others to do the same.
A little secret from me to you on inspiring others: When you come from possibility, hope, and beauty you will draw many more hands to the task and inspire enthusiasm.
Whenever there is enthusiasm, there is a creative
empowerment that goes far beyond what a mere person is
capable of.
—Eckhart Tolle, A New Earth
So dear one, I urge you to give yourself permission to Hope and Believe in the potential of other people, because (in case you feel like you are) you are not alone. We are all helping to throw the starfish back into the sea, one at a time.
Always by your side.
Much love
Valores
